5th and 6th class spent the month of April learning about mixing liquids in Science. We learned about mixing acids and bases, and how they can fizz and foam when the interact.
The first week of testing out vinegar and bread soda, we put vinegar into a cup with bread soda and is rushed up to the top and came out. We all had so much fun and enjoyed putting acids and bases together. We learned so much about the experiment.
In the second week, we mixed washing soda and orange juice, and baking soda and lemon juice. First we got out cups and our pots and we put washing soda in one cup. Then we put the orange juice in the pot and we poured the orange juice into the washing soda and fizz and foam was produced.
After that we mixed the lemon juice (as the acid), and the baking soda (as the base), and we put the lemon juice into a cup and the baking soda into the pot. We poured the lemon juice into the baking soda and it fizzed and foamed at an incredible speed.
Then it was time to use what we had learned to design and make our own volcanoes. In our copies, we designed a diagram to show how we wanted out volcanoes to look. Then we created them.
First we got a fruit pot (we like recycling!) and newspaper and we scrunched the newspaper into balls and stuck them to the pots. A few days later we painted them and to make them shiny we sprinkled glitter on them.
Finally, we put out sodas in our volcanoes. We were all very excited. Miss McLoone, Michael and Miss Cleary came to watch the eruptions!
We had our liquids and red food colouring ready to pour in on top of our bases. We combined the ingredients together and waited for the magnificent explosions!
Everybody’s volcano erupted, but only a few of them foamed over the top.
