Past Pupils Visit 2nd Class

Many thanks to Gillian and Tony, two past pupils, who visited 2nd Class to talk to us about the history of the school. We found out lots of interesting facts about the school, how it was different in the past and also how some things have remained similar! We also learned about the history of our local area outside the school.

2nd Class Nature Walk in Phoenix Park

2nd Class are studying local environments, the seasons and plants and animals in SESE. We went on a nature walk in the Phoenix Park. We had lots of fun trying to identify the different trees and spot local plants and animals. We learned about tree rings telling the ages of trees and the difference between evergreen and deciduous trees. We couldn’t resist a little trip to the playground at the end either 🙂

History, Butterflies agus Dathanna

This week 2nd Class have been busy with lots of projects. In Science we learned about the life cycle of the butterfly. We saw their wings are symmetrical and after exploring this idea in maths, we used this in our art work.

We continued using maths and colours in Irish and discovered through carrying out surveys with each other that gorm is the most popular colour in the class! Maith sibh!

In history we have been learning about what our school was like in the past (it is over 100 years old!). Andrew came in to explain an old roll book and some old school photos. We found out some interesting facts about school and life in the past!

Quentin Blake Creations in 3rd Class

As Mr Smyth’s 3rd Class are reading the novel “James and the Giant Peach” written by Roald Dahl and illustrated by Quentin Blake, the children have spent September learning about the artistic drawing style of Quentin Blake.

Today, they completed their own imaginative character based on the style of Blake and painted in the style Blake would use. You can learn more about Quentin Blake here: https://quentinblake.com/

Maps and scavenger hunt fun in 3rd Class

Today, as part of the Physical Education strand Orientation and Outdoor and Adventure, the children in 3rd Class followed a mapped route to Grangegorman campus. They carried out two fun scavenger hunts. They also took some time to discuss Living Things in the area as part of our Science topic this month, such as different tree types, potatoes growing in the garden and much more.
