The art of Axel Scheffler

Last month (September) 4th and 5th Class studied the drawings of Axel Scheffler, the illustrator of many of Julia Donaldson’s books, including the Gruffalo and A Squash and a Squeeze. We studied the methods of Axel and had a go at drawing our own interpretations of his work. Today, we painted the drawings, as Axel would have using water colours. Check out the amazing results below!

Mirror Mirror on the wall

Today in 4th and 5th Class we looked at mirrors and lenses. Curved mirrors and lens can be concave or convex.

Concave mirrors can be found on spoons. Did you ever notice when you look in a spoon you appear upside down?

We used a torch and a concave mirror to see why.

Check out why below in the picture we took.

We also looked at concave and convex lenses.

Check out what happened when shone light through a concave lens and light spread out.

4th/ 5th Class History: How Cúchulainn got his name

This week the students in Mr Smyth’s 4th/5th Class have been learning about the legend of Cúchulainn and how he got his name. Please check out the great comic strips below which they created about this Irish legend’s story. Thank you!

And if you enjoy them, why not find out more about the story by checking out the cool animation here:

Parents make Sale of Work a great success

Huge thanks to the wonderful group of parents who made our school Sale of Work such a huge success.

The parents gave up three days of their time to prepare the Sale, bake and to run the sale over two days. They were creative, industrious, fun, friendly and hardworking.

We are so lucky to have such wonderful parents to work with us here in St. Gabriel’s NS.

STAR Awards

The STAR awards took place in May in the beautiful President’s Hall in the Law Society on Blackhall Place.

The STAR awards recognise our pupils’ Special Talents in a variety of areas – Academic work, Art, Music, Drama, Dance, Involvement in the Community, Helping others, Participation in the School Community, Sport and a Past Pupil Award. All award winners are voted by the children, parents, teachers and community people involved in the school.

The awards were presented by Father Peter McVerry and past pupil, Joan Burton.

We are very proud of our ten winners, and it was especially nice that all of our winners had their families there with them in the President’s Hall to celebrate on the day.

Well done to all!
