Celebration of Learning

The Celebration of Learning is an annual event run by the Home School Community Liaison teachers across Dublin 7. It is a day to celebrate the learning achievements of the parents and other members of the community who attend courses in our local schools.

We are so proud that so many parents from St. Gabriel’s attended such a wide variety of courses and classes this year. The attended English, Sewing, Aerobics, Cookery and Baking, Cake Decorating, Computer courses, Operation Transformation Fitness classes and Incredible Years Parents’ Programme.

We would like to extend a huge THANK YOU to all of the tutors who facilitated the classes.

Well done to all of you who attended courses this year. We look forward to seeing you back again in September, and we hope many more of you will become involved in classes and courses too.

1916 Project work continues

Mr. Linnane’s 5th and 6th class pupils are working hard on their 1916 projects. As well as learning lots about both the leaders of the Rising and the ordinary people, they have continued their art work, creating the stories around artefacts from the rising. As you can see from the pictures below, the poster work is almost finished. The children will soon be working on recordings of the stories the posters tell.

Both the posters and recordings of the stories will later be displayed in DIT Grangegorman.

The class is also looking forward to two more visits to the National Museum at Collins Barracks – to see the new 1916 Exhibition, Proclaiming a Republic, and following on from that they will participate in a workshop with Dermot Bolger, a writer who will be in residence in the museum.

Artefact Artwork

Mr Linnane’s 5th and 6th class are continuing work on their 1916 project this week.

The class is working in groups, each on one artefact from the 1916 Easter Rising. They are using images of the artefacts to tell a story – stories set in Easter Week. The artefacts the children have chosen include a charred green flag, a melted bottle, James Connolly’s shirt, a dummy rifle, a volunteer’s uniform, a bottle of iodine and a hat.

A picture really does paint a thousand words, and no doubt these pictures will tell interesting stories of what happened in Dublin 100 years ago.

Thank You!

Many thanks to Byrne’s Allcare Pharmacy on the Oxmantown Road for making a donation towards the running of our Breakfast Club.

Here in St. Gabriel’s, we are delighted to run a very popular and busy breakfast club for the children. The breakfast club not only provides the children with a breakfast to set them up for the day, and all the learning and play that they do, but it is also an important social opportunity for them. The breakfast room is always a hive of chatter and laughter in the mornings.

To provide this to the children right through the year, we need extra funds, so we were very grateful to accept a generous cheque for €250 from Fiona from Byrne’s Allcare Pharmacy. The money will go towards continuing to provide the children of St. Gabriel’s with a breakfast before school each morning.

The Garda Band visit St Gabriel’s

The boys and girls of St Gabriel’s were treated to a live performance from the Garda Band this morning. We sang Christmas songs such as Jingle Bells, Rudolf the Red-Nosed Reindeer, and We Wish you a Merry Christmas.

The teachers even did a special performance for the children – a great rendition of Heads, Shoulders, Knees and Toes!

St. Gabriel’s Christmas Show

Our annual Christmas performance was a great success and a real treat.

Parents, grandparents, friends and families were treated to a superb selection of festive songs, poetry and a wonderfully performed nativity from Junior Infants.

Some children read poems that they had written themselves, expressing the true meaning of Christmas. The music was fun, lively and enjoyed by all.

There was a fantastic turnout – a full house. The children were so happy to see so many people there to support their hard work.

May we take this opportunity again to wish all of you a very happy and peaceful Christmas and best wishes for the year ahead from all in Saint Gabriel’s NS.
