World Cup Soccer Tournament Finals!

After many exciting matches over the last few weeks, the finals of the St. Gabriel’s World Cup soccer competition took place in Aughrim Street Sports Centre before a lively crowd.  Ian Hill of the Football Association of Ireland was on hand as referee with help from Mr. Smyth and Ms. Hyland.

The semi- finals saw Nigeria come up against Ireland.  While it was a close game, Nigeria came out the victors at full time.  The second semi-final was another closely fought game with India and Scotland battling it out for a place in the final.  After a number of excellent goals scored by both sides, Scotland eventually came out on top.

The finalists – Nigeria and Scotland – somehow found the energy to deliver an enthralling final match with Nigeria the eventual winners.  All the teams that had taken part showed great sportsmanship throughout and were gracious in both defeat and victory.  Well done to all involved.

Green Walk!

St. Gabriel‘s annual sponsored Green Walk was held on 15th of March this year and was enjoyed again by all. Well done to all the children who worked hard to fill their sponsorship cards and thank you to all the parents, neighbours, aunties, uncles, grannies and grandads who sponsored them.  We were lucky enough to have beautiful weather on this day and our pupils were a colourful sight as they walked through Stoneybatter in their green costumes.

St. Gabriel’s Pupils give Presentation in Dublin City Council

Some of our pupils were recently honoured by being invited to give a presentation in Dublin City Council’s Wood Quay Auditorium.

In November, the children of 5th and 6th Class took part in a Power of Design workshop.  Having made such a positive impression with their enthusiasm and creativity during the workshop, the pupils were invited in 2017 to give a presentation at a reception to celebrate and promote the Power of Design.

The children from Junior Infants and 5th/6th Class have started another great activity together this term.  Junior Infants picked out some books that they enjoy and asked their ‘Buddies’ in Ms. Fahey’s room to read to them.

Everyone really enjoyed our reading time and we’re all looking forward to next week!

Friday 2nd of December saw the the final of the Dublin City Neighbourhoods Awards 2016 (Schools Category) take place in the Oak Room in the Mansion House.  The Lord Mayor of Dublin Brendan Carr was on hand to present the awards and to hear about all the fantastic work that has been done in each of the schools that reached the final.

St. Gabriel’s, winners of the Dublin City North section for the extensive work that has been done to create our colourful school garden, were awarded a ‘Highly Commended’ in the the competition.  Our eight pupils from 6th Class who were present on the day were wonderful representatives for our school.  Well done and congratulations to all who were involved.

5th and 6th visit the Irish UN Veterans Association

The pupils from 5th and 6th Class were very excited last week to be invited to visit the Irish UN Veterans Association in Arbour Hill.  They were given a fascinating tour of  the Arbour Hill Cemetery where the leaders of the 1916 Rising are buried.  After that our guide Stephen showed the class around the veterans garden and the Irish UN Veterans Museum.  Everybody learned some interesting facts about the role of the Irish Army and their peacekeeping duties around the world.

Dublin Zoo trip

Ms. Fahey’s class took a trip to Dublin Zoo in November.  This was a trip that was suggested by the pupils themselves and we all had a fabulous time.  Arriving at 9:30am, just as the zoo was opening, meant that there were no queues to avoid and we had a clear view of all the animals.  Some highlights were the racing sea-lions, the orangutan looking for a kiss and the grumpy gorilla who was afraid we would steal his food!
