The Theatre Comes to St. Gabriel’s

Thursday the 12th of May saw the return of the  M & M Players theatre group to St. Gabriel’s.  This year’s production was based on the classic novel The Railway Children by E. Nesbit and it brought to life the story of a family and the Yorkshire railways in the early 20th century.  The bright sets and colourful costumes added to the drama and the show was greatly enjoyed by the children from Junior Infants to 6th Class.  The children of 5th and 6th class were lucky enough to enjoy a theatre workshop with the cast after the show had ended.

Proclamation Day in St. Gabriel’s N.S.

‘Proclamation Day’ took place on Tuesday March 15th. This was the day when every school in the country was invited to share the results of their Proclamation for a New Generation. Here in St.Gabriel’s National School  the students did not disappoint! So much so that Aughrim Street Credit Union requested a copy which is currently on display for all members of the community to see. The many prominent members of the community that attended on the day believe that what the children had to say was worthy on many levels. There are lessons to be learned from what they have highlighted as the burning issues for 2016 and their generation.

In the morning a very special concert took place celebrating all things Irish from storytelling to song and poetry in the school hall. Some of our Irish Dancers performed in their beautiful costumes. There was also a presentation from our Senior Classes celebrating the Leaders of 1916.

The Ceremony itself was led by Ms McLoone and two army representatives, John and Paul. They came  from McKee Barracks and performed the official flag raising on the day dressed in full attire. They were accompanied by a bagpipe player and the stars of the day, Keelagh and Darcy. Keelagh and Darcy are two Irish Wolfhounds who are well used to official ceremonies. Keelagh  led the Dublin Fire Brigade in this year’ s St.Patrick’s Day Parade and has even met the Queen! The children and adults were all very excited to have a meet and greet with them after the official proceedings! Ms Comerford read the original Proclamation while Daniel was selected to read the Proclamation for a New Generation. Our youngest student Aryan presented the flag to the soldiers for raising.

We wish to extend our sincere gratitude to past pupil Séamus Stone and his community team of workers and local businesses that have been working tirelessly to provide us with the funding and the man power for a flagpole and various additions to our school grounds in preparation for this special day. Without Seamus this day just would not have run to the same level. We would also like to thank our caretaker Andrew Martin for all of his involvement on the day and in the lead up to it. Aughrim Street Credit Union have been extremely generous and provided us with a plaque to commemorate our special day. It is wonderful to be part of the Stoneybatter Community at this very important time in history.

Céilí Mór!

During Seachtain na Gaeilge we all had a great time doing céilí dancing in the P.E. hall.
Bhí craic mór againn sa halla ag damhsa le chéile.

Tráth na gCeist!

During Seachtain na Gaeilge we had a Tráth na gCeist (table quiz) in Irish. Well done to all the children who took part and comhghairdeas (congratulations) to our winners!

Great Fun at the Dead Zoo

2nd and 3rd Class took an interesting trip today to the Natural History Museum, otherwise known as the Dead Zoo.  While some of the children had visited the museum before, some of the others were a little bit nervous about what they might see in a Dead Zoo!

Everyone had a wonderful time exploring the different animals, insects, fish and birds on display.   Without a doubt the pupils and teachers all left having learned about creatures that they never even knew about.

Story Time in Senior Infants!

We were delighted to be invited by Cabra Library to participate in Story Time again. Two lovely librarians visited our Senior Infants and read them a story in our own wonderful school library!

1916 Project work continues

Mr. Linnane’s 5th and 6th class pupils are working hard on their 1916 projects. As well as learning lots about both the leaders of the Rising and the ordinary people, they have continued their art work, creating the stories around artefacts from the rising. As you can see from the pictures below, the poster work is almost finished. The children will soon be working on recordings of the stories the posters tell.

Both the posters and recordings of the stories will later be displayed in DIT Grangegorman.

The class is also looking forward to two more visits to the National Museum at Collins Barracks – to see the new 1916 Exhibition, Proclaiming a Republic, and following on from that they will participate in a workshop with Dermot Bolger, a writer who will be in residence in the museum.
