Santa Claus pays a visit to St. Gabriel’s

We had a very special visitor to St. Gabriel’s this week.

Santa Claus came to visit on Wednesday. He said he had heard that we are the best school in Dublin with the best boys and girls. And he’s right!

He very kindly gave a gift of a book to every single boy and girl in the whole school. He reminded the children how reading is so important and also lots of fun.

We were very impressed that Santa has been learning Irish too, and was able to use his cúpla focail. He was very impressed with the good manners of the children throughout the school in English and in Irish.

Wishing all the children and their families a very happy Christmas.

School reopens Monday 8th January at 8:50am

Tables Championship Finals!

One of the most popular events every year in Maths Week in St. Gabriel’s is the Tables Championship.  Pupils from 1st to 3rd Class battle it out to become the junior champion, and those from 4th to 6th Class compete for the senior crown.  In a tense final, Ms. McLoone had to keep adding more and more difficult sums until the winners finally emerged.  Well done to all involved!

Maths Week 2017

Maths Week Ireland took place in October of this year all around the country and as usual the children in St. Gabriel’s took part in many different activities, from Maths trails and Maths games to our first ever Maths Week Table Quiz.  Thank you to all the parents who came along to take part in the events.  The most important goal of Maths Week is that the children have fun while learning and we all agreed that this was definitely true!

World Cup Soccer Tournament Finals!

After many exciting matches over the last few weeks, the finals of the St. Gabriel’s World Cup soccer competition took place in Aughrim Street Sports Centre before a lively crowd.  Ian Hill of the Football Association of Ireland was on hand as referee with help from Mr. Smyth and Ms. Hyland.

The semi- finals saw Nigeria come up against Ireland.  While it was a close game, Nigeria came out the victors at full time.  The second semi-final was another closely fought game with India and Scotland battling it out for a place in the final.  After a number of excellent goals scored by both sides, Scotland eventually came out on top.

The finalists – Nigeria and Scotland – somehow found the energy to deliver an enthralling final match with Nigeria the eventual winners.  All the teams that had taken part showed great sportsmanship throughout and were gracious in both defeat and victory.  Well done to all involved.

A Morning of Culture with Annual Poetry Reading

The staff and pupils of St. Gabriel’s from 1st to 6th Class came together to hold our annual Poetry Reading event.  The atmosphere in the P.E. Hall was one of warmth, relaxation and respect as many of the children shared the poetry that they had written themselves with the wider school community.

With our special celebrity guest on the day Ms. McGarrity present, the children relaxed on their cushions as our host, Ms. Comerford invited different children to the mike.  There were a variety of poetry genres on display, from haiku and limericks, to acrostic and descriptive poems.  The level of calmness and confidence displayed by our poets was highly impressive as they read to their audience.  As an audience, we experienced a range of emotions ranging from tears to laughter. Some of the themes explored included animals, trees, personal explorations and witty observations.

On this weekend celebrating Yeats 2015 ( the 150th anniversary of the birth of W.B. Yeats) this was a true celebration of poetry and we are looking forward to next years event!
