Today, Mr Smyth’s 3rd Class turned their classroom into a mini-cinema with popcorn and watched the movie adaptation of “James and the Giant Peach”, which we compared and contrasted with the book.
Over the last few months, the children have read the book together. They worked hard writing chapter summaries, character profiles, story profiles, book reviews, advertisements for a peach visit and much more. They also created clay creations of characters from the book.
On Monday, we had a Bank Holiday in recognition of St Brigid’s Day. This week and last, the children read the story of “St. Brigid’s Cloak”.
Today, the children in 3rd Class made St Brigid’s crosses with the help of Ms Leonard (Thank you Ms Leonard!) who popped in to demonstrate the art lesson.
The children had great fun learning the weaving skill involved in making them. Check out the pictures below.
This week, Mr Smyth’s 3rd Class completed their clay creations of characters from their novel “James and the Giant Peach”. They made 3-D representations of Earthworm, Miss Spider, Sponge, Spider, the Peach, Centipede and many more. Today, they added a splash of colour to their clay work using bright acrylic paints. 3rd Class have been learning about Forces in Science, Construction in Art and the Romans in History. They combined all of this by designing and making their own Roman catapults in groups. Check out their amazing creations below. They had so much fun shooting paper “boulders” from their catapults!
3rd Class had the pleasure of a visit from Agostino who came in to answer the children’s questions about Italy. They had questions about Italian food, cities, cars and much more. We have been learning about Italy in Geography so this was a great opportunity to interview someone from the country.

The children in 3rd Class completed their “My Christmas Wish” artwork for the RTE News2Day Christmas Art Competition.
The artwork is in the envelope and is making its way to RTE studios as we speak.

Today, 3rd Class had a wonderful day in Cabra Library. The event was called “Ballad of a Bandit” which is a story of a highway man, a Robin Hood-like character and master of disguise, named Captain McNamara. This was a one man theatre show with music, object animation, clown and expert storytelling. It was interactive and huge fun! As the class are learning about Narrative Writing (story writing) in English this month and next, this activity will no doubt be fantastic inspiration for their own creative writing.
