Maths Week 2015

The pupils and teachers of St. Gabriel’s will be celebrating national Maths Week 2015 from the 12th to the 16th of October. As well as making Maths lessons extra fun every day that week, a number of events will also take place throughout the school, with pupils from Junior Infants to 6th Class taking part. During the week there will be different Maths Trails taking place around the school and in the Phoenix Park. The children from 1st Class to 6th Class will be vying for a spot in the Tables Championship finals on Thursday. On Wednesday at 9 am, every pupil in the school will take part in a Maths Games Extravaganza in the P.E. Hall and we look forward to seeing as many parents as possible taking part in this fantastic event. For more information on Maths Week Ireland check out www.mathsweek.ie.
Swimming Time!
Here are some of the pupils of 3rd Class who were VERY excited to be starting swimming lessons last Friday! They will be making the journey to the National Aquatic Centre every week with the other pupils from 4th, 5th and 6th Class.
A Morning of Culture with Annual Poetry Reading
The staff and pupils of St. Gabriel’s from 1st to 6th Class came together to hold our annual Poetry Reading event. The atmosphere in the P.E. Hall was one of warmth, relaxation and respect as many of the children shared the poetry that they had written themselves with the wider school community.
With our special celebrity guest on the day Ms. McGarrity present, the children relaxed on their cushions as our host, Ms. Comerford invited different children to the mike. There were a variety of poetry genres on display, from haiku and limericks, to acrostic and descriptive poems. The level of calmness and confidence displayed by our poets was highly impressive as they read to their audience. As an audience, we experienced a range of emotions ranging from tears to laughter. Some of the themes explored included animals, trees, personal explorations and witty observations.
On this weekend celebrating Yeats 2015 ( the 150th anniversary of the birth of W.B. Yeats) this was a true celebration of poetry and we are looking forward to next years event!
Alice in Wonderland comes to St. Gabriel’s

Monday morning was very exciting this week for both the pupils and teachers of St. Gabriel’s when M & M Productions, an international theatre group, returned to put on another amazing show. The production this year was Alice in Wonderland and this magical story was brought to life for all the children in a vivid and imaginative way. Everyone really enjoyed the antics of The White Rabbit and The Mad Hatter and the only disappointment was when the show was over. What a great way to start off the week!
First Holy Communion
Well done to the children in 2nd Class that made their First Holy Communion on Saturday May 9th. They had worked very hard to prepare for this special day and were helped and supported by all their classmates. Our wonderful choir on the day was made up from children from 2nd to 6th Class of all different religions and cultures and they certainly made the experience even more enjoyable!
World Cup Finals

Monday 23rd of March saw the annual Football World Cup in St. Gabriel’s draw to a close. Over the past few weeks the children from 2nd to 6th Class have been playing together on teams with names that represent the different countries that some of our pupils or their families are from. From Ireland to Poland, and Scotland to Zimbabwe, the teams have been battling it out to reach the semi-finals which took place in the Aughrim Street Sports Centre.
Referee on the day was Ian Hill of the FAI who has been running the competition with Ms. Hyland and Mr. Smyth. Both semi-finals were nailbiting affairs and the spectators were never sure which team was going to walk away with the cup, but it was India who managed to swing it in the final. Well done to South Africa, Estonia and Bulgaria who came 2nd, 3rd and 4th respectively.
