Throwback Thursday!

World Cup Champions 2020 - Poland

Can you believe it that 10 weeks ago today we were all in Aughrim Street Sports Centre for the finals of our wonderful World Cup soccer competition? 12 teams took part initially in the group stages. Each team’s name represented pupils’ and their families’ multicultural background which we celebrate annually with our One World Week activities. Continue reading →

Ms Whyte – Nature, Counting and Science Activities

Hello again everyone!

I hope you and your families are all well. I have been in the countryside since school closed and have been going on lovely walks every day with the dog. One of the most exciting things that I have found on these walks are tadpoles! I took a short video of them which you can see here. Some are swimming about and some are asleep. Have a look at this PowerPoint I found on Twinkl to find out more about the Life Cycle of a Frog.

The birds are singing all day too and sound so happy. Listen to them here in my back garden last week. I think you might be able to hear a bee buzzing there too! What sounds of nature can you hear when you go out into your garden or to the park?

It is so nice to see all kinds of wild flowers growing everywhere. I have taken some photos to show you. You can click on each one below to see the larger image. I also took a photo of a bee on a dandelion after I read Ms O’Dowd’s post last week!

I already knew the names of some of these flowers but I did have to do some research to find out the names of the others. I used the websites http://www.irishwildflowers.ie/ and http://www.wildflowersofireland.net/ to help me. Maybe you could check to see if I got them right.

Next time you go out for a walk have a look out for flowers, especially wild flowers. If you don’t know the names of them, take a photo and use these websites to research them.

I have also heard the cuckoo every day this week. I recorded his cuckoo song in a wood near my house – listen here to hear it! I also discovered that one of the wild flowers I have seen is called a cuckoo flower! It was given this name because it usually flowers around the same time the cuckoo begins to sing.

Counting

I say this every week – it is very important to keep practising your Counting!

This week please keep practising the counting activities, addtition activiites and maths games that were in my other posts here and here and here.

– Count both forwards and backwards. This might be between 0 and 20, between 0 and 50 or between 0 and 100.

– Say the next number before and after, e.g. What number comes before 19? After 26?

– Count forwards and backwards across the decades, e.g. forwards 28, 29, 30, 31, 32; backwards 42, 41, 40, 39, 38.

Those of you in the Senior classes could:

– Count forwards and backwards over 100, between 0 and 1000, over 1000, etc.

– Say the next number before and after, e.g. What number comes before 500? After 345?

– Practise counting forwards and backwards in 2s 3s 4s 5s 6s 7s 8s 9s and 10s.

– Count in 10s off the decade, e.g. count in 10s beginning at 4, 14, 24, 34, 44, 54, 64, etc. Don’t forget backwards too! 104, 94, 84, 74, etc.

Science

Did any of you get a chance to make a tornado in a bottle?! If you did, or you are still planning to try it, you could take a video of it and upload it to Seesaw.

Here’s another experiment – can you make an egg float in water? https://www.sciencekids.co.nz/experiments/floatingeggs.html

After doing this experiment you can read here about the Dead Sea which is a very salty lake in the Middle East. It’s so salty that people can float in the water without any effort – just like the eggs in our experiment!

Please note: For internet based activities please ensure your children are supervised while accessing the internet.

Happy May Day Senior Infants

Hello Senior Infants,

Happy May Day – Lá Bealtaine to you and your families. Today is the first day of summer for us and what great weather we are having so far! May Day is celebrated in lots of ways around the world. Maybe your parents might remember some of these traditions!

Remember, I told you about our new calf that was born on 10th April. My father and I loved hearing all the names that Senior Infants suggested for our calf. My father liked the name Ted. I have included a picture of Ted when he was a few days old. I will take more pictures of him as he is growing every day.

This week, I have been putting together a variety of activities that your child may have-a-go at if it suits. Here is a link to Suggestions for Senior Infants.
