Work and Play in 1st Class

In maths, the children in 1st Class have been busy learning all about 2D shapes. We engaged in lots of oral discussions and hands-on activities to explore a variety of 2D shapes and discover their different properties.

Fun with 2D Shapes

The children in 1st Class truly adore their weekly trips to the school library. They are very responsible when using their own library cards to borrow books and they take great pride in choosing their reading material. We especially enjoy having a little peek through our new books just before home time.

Library time

In Art, we recently painted our clay creations. These included emojis, hearts and a variety of imaginative pieces inspired by the children’s own ideas.

The children constructed dragon puppets as part of the Chinese New Year Celebrations, which will begin on February 17th 2026.

Greetings from 1st Class

Student teachers from the Netherlands visited our class and taught us some traditional Dutch songs and rhymes. First Class reciprocated by proudly performing some of their own songs and poetry, much to the delight of our visitors. The children were excited to locate the Netherlands on the map and asked the students many thoughtful and inquisitive questions about their country and traditions. It was a wonderful cultural exchange that everyone enjoyed.

In Maths, we have been learning about skip counting. The children have been practising counting by fives and tens using the abaci, helping them to visualise number patterns and build confident counting skills.

The children used cardboard, feathers and a variety of craft materials to create their own bird structures. We look forward to integrating these characters into our narrative stories over the next week or so.

Birds of a feather flock together

First Class are currently constructing houses using cereal boxes and other cardboard materials. We have enjoyed creating walls and doorways for our cardboard houses. The children are currently attaching these structures to the floors by creating tabs to make their buildings stronger and more stable. Everyone is looking forward to displaying our finished creations. It’s a fantastic way to learn about construction, design and teamwork while having fun!

Sports Day 2024 – Junior & Senior Infants

Junior and Senior Infants had a great time participating in our Sports Day.

We had so much to do. We took part in fun races like the sack race, the egg and spoon race and the three-legged race. We played football and took penalties. We tried the tug-of-war and enjoyed playing with the parachute. A great day was had by all.

Clonfert School Tour 2024 – Junior & Senior Infants

Junior and Senior Infants travelled to Co. Kildare to visit Clonfert Pet Farm for our school tour. We had such a great time! We were busy all day trying out a variety of activities. We had fun on the bouncy castle, driving go-karts, playing football and playing in a few of the many playgrounds.

We enjoyed being brought on a guided tour of the farm and zoo to see lots of interesting animals and birds. We saw guinea pigs, owls, llamas, alpaca, rabbits, sheep, ponies, meerkats and a porcupine to name a few.

The fun didn’t stop on the farm. On the coach we entertained ourselves by chatting, singing songs and sightseeing out the windows.

Some of the activities we enjoyed can be seen in the photos. Senior infants tried the mini-golf and we all had a go on the zip-line. We even had time to fit in some play in the indoor soft-play area.

Senior Infants 2024

Our play theme this month in Senior Infants is ‘Visiting the Hairdressers’. We are having so much fun learning new vocabulary through play.
As part of our maths lessons, we worked in groups to sort 3D shapes and played memory games to name but a few tasks.

Our ‘buddies’ gave us tips on how to play nicely with toys during yard time. In return, we showed them a folk dance called ‘Skip to my Lou’.

This month we explored clay and in the process created imaginative pieces of work!

Senior Infants constructed dragon puppets in preparation for the Chinese New Year which is on February 10th.

All the boys and girls in Senior Infants are delighted to begin dancing with Bernie again.
