Junior Infants 3rd June 2020

Hello Boys and girls in Junior Infants,

You have all been working so hard since our school closed its doors so I want you to take the time over the next week or so to do some of your favourite activities. Think about all the activities that I have suggested over the last few weeks. Which activities did you enjoy doing the most – phonics, maths, art, writing, story online, reading? I loved seeing so many of you take part in Flower Power Week! Perhaps you and your family came up with other exciting and fun things to do. Below you’ll find a few reminders of some activities we’ve done along with some links to click on to practise what you’ve learned so far. There are exciting things in store over the next few weeks so keep checking on the website and on Seesaw to hear more. Continue reading →

Assembly Monday May 25th

Hi Everybody!

Welcome to the last week in May! I hope you are enjoying the lovely weather! Congratulations on all the hard work being done by students, staff and families of St. Gabriel’s N.S.

I want to welcome Ms O’Loughlin back. She will be working as a Support Teacher and is looking forward to catching up with you all!

Ms Dunne loved the beautiful pictures and cards you sent on SeeSaw!

I want to wish Donato a very Happy Birthday from us all!

So this week and next week are a bit shorter as we are off on Friday May 29th and Mon June 1st and Tuesday June 2nd. How valuable this time off is to those trying to juggle home schooling with working from home and the various other challenges that are presenting in our households.

Remember we are all doing our best and to try and put your mental health and wellbeing above all else. There are days when we feel incredibly sad and we miss our friends and routine and there are days where we are able to be grateful for what we have. We need to stay strong, stay at home and do our best so that June 8th will allow us more freedom. I am sure you are all experts by now at washing your hands and maintaining social distance.

So to cheer us up we are going to have a FLOWER POWER themed week!

So I want you to draw flowers, create flowers, colour flowers, photograph flowers, plant flowers, write about flowers, dress up as a flower, dance like a flower and send your photos and videos to your teacher on SeeSaw if you can! Do you get the idea?

The Bloom Festival in Phoenix Park this year will be held on-line. They are running an online competition on Sunday May 31st. They want people to share pictures of their colourful gardens…some fun videos capturing how garden spaces are being used. They also want to celebrate examples of great community spirit…” as simple as adding something to your front garden for those passing to enjoy from a socially acceptable distance.” On May 31st, posts on social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter) using the hashtag #BloomwithRTE (more info available here: https://www.rte.ie/lifestyle/living/2020/0518/1139048-bloom-2020-is-moving-online-with-a-colourful-competition/ )

Have a lovely week flowers!!

Suzanne Comerford

A flower meditation and a leakproof bag experiment (you might need a mop!)

Hello everyone!

I hope you are all keeping well.

As we are into Flower Power this week in St. Gabriel’s N.S., here is a guided meditation from cosmic kids yoga. Click on the picture below and the guided meditation will open in Safetube.

Over the past few weeks I have planted a lot of summer seeds and bulbs which I hope will begin to shoot up and bloom when they are ready. Like the seed in the meditation, they will need heat from the sun and water from the clouds (or the tap!) to help them to grow.

Maths

You can keep practicing the counting, addition and subtraction activities and playing the maths games that were in my previous posts.

This week here is a rekenrek activity for Doubles. It is a PowerPoint file which should download to your device. Open and play the slideshow to do the activity.
Rekenrek – Doubles

Following on from the subtraction activity last week, here is another one for you to try. It is a PowerPoint file which should download to your device. Open and play the slideshow to do the activity.
Subtraction activity, e.g. 8 – ? = 5

Science

I was delighted to see some of you trying the experiment about an egg floating in water over the past few weeks.
Here is another interesting experiment you might like to try – The Leakproof Bag Experiment (video opens in Safetube)
Please ask an adult at home for permission to do the experiment and ask them for help if you need it.
Do this experiment outside or over the sink or bath because if you get it wrong you’ll be mopping up a lot of water!
If you are using Seesaw, send some photos of the experiment to your class teacher!
(If you want to know more about how this experiment works please see here).

I hope you have a good week. Stay happy and safe!

Ms Whyte

Please note: For internet based activities please ensure your children are supervised while accessing the internet.

Missing you All!

Hello again to all the brilliant pupils of St. Gabriel’s NS!  I hope that you are all feeling confident, healthy and strong.  This week I did a little bit of cycling and running and a lot of walking to keep myself healthy and strong like you.  I also did some baking and made some delicious, healthy granola and some even more delicious chocolate chip cookies!!

There were more cookies than this but they seem to have disappeared somewhere!

Yoga                                                                                                                                         I was so impressed last week to see a video of someone doing their morning yoga on Seesaw.  I am still practising holding the Tree pose and I am definitely getting better.      This week I want you to practise the Warrior 1 pose. Stand tall and don’t forget to breathe.  Think warrior thoughts like “I am brave, I am strong”.

Writing                                                                                                                               Remember you can be any age and still think up an amazing and creative story.  If you don’t feel confident writing your story down then illustrate what you have created or else just tell someone the story as people did in olden times.  This week I want you to think If you could have any fantasy pet, what would it be and why?

Finally to the children and their families in the school who will be celebrating a little differently this weekend than they would normally, wishing you peace and health.

Assembly Monday 18th May

Dear children,

I am such a proud principal seeing all the wonderful work you are submitting and I look forward to seeing the assignments of those of you who are working directly from packs and from the website when we get back.

SeeSaw is really fun to use and if you or your parents need any help using it be sure to give Mr Donnelly a call!!

I was a happy principal and Mammy this week when I saw that myself and Hollie could read some books and answer questions! Poppy the dog even got recorded barking and growling!! We try to do 2 or 3 tasks every day but if some days it doesn’t work out that is fine as I am trying to do all my principal work and Hollie’s Daddy is also gone back to work.

Every family, student and staff member from St Gabriel’s N.S. is doing their very best in an ever changing situation so well done to you all.

Vivienne, Andrew, Pauline, Emma, Sharon D, Sharon H, Ashley and Maighréad miss you all so much and say a big HELLO!!!!!

I am sad to say that this is Ms Dunne’s last week with us. She has been a wonderful addition to our school and we will miss her.

If you want to send her a picture or goodbye message your teacher will pass it on through SeeSaw.

Try and get as much fresh air as you can and practice throwing and catching a ball this week if you can. See can you catch and throw without dropping 20 times!

I hope our Communion children had a nice day on Saturday. Maybe you dressed up or still had a party!

Happy Birthday to Phillip and Carlos!

Work hard this week, get fresh air and be nice to your family as we look forward to better times.

Missing you all,

Suzanne Comerford
